I awoke this morning (August 27, 2003) to the sound
of Rivershore's fire alarm and soon
realized that there was a fire in progress, just over the hills on the Golf
Course's eastern extremities.
Fire trucks rushing to the scene. The
Rivershore fire department was first on site,
soon joined by trucks from other areas in Kamloops and other equipment (planes/helicopters
etc.)
Fire retardant continuously dropped
on the ridge.
Sight from Shuswap road, just past the
Rivershore storage compound.
Planes circling before the helicopters start dropping water from the river.
Police arrive in a number of cars, along with the media and several onlookers further along the roadside.
Rainbow over the hills taken at 7:30PM after a light sprinkle.
I'm happy to report that it looks like the fire has
been extinguished and the Forestry Department is taking care
of any lingering hotspots. It would appear that the fire started when somebody
decided to scare off some bears with a
flare gun, after they found them eating some discarded fruit brought up into
the hills, from a property owner's tree. With tinder
dry conditions, and plenty of sagebrush, this fire took off quickly.
Special thanks to all those who responded so quickly and for everyone's extraordinary
effort.
